A couple of years ago Active Northumberland set up a running club in Seahouses called Seahouses Striders, which used to meet at the Community Centre. Everyone is welcome and we are always looking to increase the number of runners from complete beginners who can only jog/walk to those fit enough to race a 5k or 10k or even complete a marathon.
VENUE: We now meet at “Physicality” in Main Street, North Sunderland opposite St Paul’s Church as we have a warm reception room to stand inside while waiting for everyone to arrive which is much more pleasant than a car park, especially in the winter! Also there are toilet facilities and people can leave valuables or spare clothing/drinks etc inside to collect after the run. There is plenty of parking outside although the majority run or cycle to the premises.
TIME: Every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 6pm sharp. If you’re after 6pm, we’ll be gone!
The running club leaders are Kath Douglas and Louise Dawson. Sometimes Robert Baddeley, a level 2 triathlon coach, will take a session.
We have a variety of options as to where to run and what to do. In the summer months we often run about 5 miles around the quiet roads out of North Sunderland and back through Shoreston, either a steady run or timed interval efforts. If the tide is out, the beach is another venue or we may head to a nearby short hill for hill repeats. In the winter, technique or sprint sessions at the harbour along the quay or up harbour hill work well, being sheltered, traffic free and with lighting. We also run around the village, especially at Christmas to enjoy the lights. And recently we have been given permission by the football club to use the football field off Broad Road.
Runners of any ability are welcome and will be catered for. We may split into groups of different ability but if there are not many of us we run intervals where the fastest jog back after each interval to catch up the slower runners before we go again. No-one gets left behind and we are a very friendly, inclusive and supportive lot.
Running is a great way to get fit, meet new people and enjoy the support of others. In between running club, it’s free to get out and run whenever it fits your schedule. Once you are more confident, you may even join the several Seahouses runners who enter local 5k and 10k events from time to time. Your time is unimportant, but participating and having the satisfaction of completing the event is what matters.
